Safe Child Center

Overview

Safe Child Center (SCC) was founded at Flagstaff Medical Center in 1994. SCC serves children, and also adults with developmental disabilities,  from throughout Northern Arizona.  Children are referred to Safe Child Center by law enforcement agencies, child protective services, and area prosecutors.   SCC is dedicated to reducing the stress that children experience as victims of crime and to supporting the efforts of law enforcement and child protective services to ensure that child victims are treated with respect and dignity throughout the investigative process.  It is our hope that these efforts will result in safety and justice for children and the community.

My niece blossomed like a flower after she came to talk with you.

Services

Safe Child Center works in partnership with other investigative agencies to achieve a coordinated, comprehensive evaluation.  Children seen at Safe Child may participate in an interview with a specially trained forensic interviewer to gather information about their experiences. The interview is conducted in a child-friendly environment and with respect to the individual child’s developmental abilities and needs.

Children seen at SCC may also receive a medical exam performed by an experienced pediatric practitioner who is child-focused, gentle, and sensitive to the child’s needs. Medical evaluations are conducted to assess the overall well-being of the child, with an emphasis on signs and symptoms of abuse, including injury, infection and recoverable evidence.

A family advocate is also present at SCC to provide guidance to caregivers regarding the evaluation process, how to respond to the needs of their child, and concerns about counseling.  Trauma assessments and behavioral health treatment by highly skilled therapists are available to children and their family members.

My daughter told me that she felt a whole lot better because, “I know people are there to help me.  I feel happy, like it’s my birthday.”
