ChildHelp Mobile
Children's Center of Arizona

The Children’s Mobile Advocacy Center is a partnership project involving Childhelp and the Safe Child Center at the Flagstaff Medical Center. The program was started in 2003 and now consists of a 38 foot Winnebago motor home, which has been specially modified to include a forensic interview room with specialized audio/video equipment.

The advocacy center is a place for child victims and their families to deal with their trauma in a positive manner and assist investigators to identify criminal suspects. The victims and their families must have a safe place where they can start to heal and recover from abusive situations.

“I did not have any way to transport my child for the investigation, thank you.”

The program was started to address the need for forensic interview services to child victims in the rural areas of Northern Arizona.

The mobile advocacy center works to improve the efficiency of child abuse investigations by traveling to the victims and providing services, eliminating the need for the child victims, families, law enforcement and social services personnel to travel sometimes long distances to Flagstaff or Phoenix to receive required services. The mobile advocacy center operates in Coconino, Navajo, Apache, Gila and Mohave counties in Arizona.

Our most unique aspect of the child advocacy center is mobility. We have the ability to travel to many different locations and provide services to victims and communities. There are only a handful of mobile children’s advocacy centers like ours operating in the United States.

Recently, the mobile advocacy center responded to assist with an attempted child kidnapping incident. The mobile advocacy center allowed the child to have a safe, child friendly place to recount the incident with the interviewer, providing important information to investigators to identify the suspects and resolve the case. The child was relieved to be able to tell his story and assist the investigation.

The children are provided with snacks and a stuffed toy animal at the end of their visit. The mobile unit staff works to make the children’s visit a positive experience to assist them in their recovery.

Annual Events

The Flagstaff Childhelp Chapter has a yearly fundraising dinner and auction to raise funds for the mobile advocacy center and increase awareness of child abuse issues to community members. The event has been very successful.
